Lin, as I can extract from Google.com (/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py ? answer=99170) "Rich snippets (microdata, microformats, and RDFa)" from 19th of August 2011:

    ---

" […] You can mark up your structured HTML content any of three formats: microdata, microformats, or RDFa. You can use whichever standard you prefer […] ".

    ---

Google accepts all three: RDFa, microdata & microformats.

  • @Blooniverse they accept all three for Rich Snippets, which uses a different vocabulary. My understanding is that they will continue to understand all three for Rich Snippets data-vocabulary terms, but will not for Schema.org terms

  • @linwclark Thanks for the explanation, your contribution to the Drupal community is invaluable and much appreciated.

It's all very new/Wild West in RDF/Drupal Land, I hope we can all make sense of the different modules when this hits mainstream. I'll keep in mind your suggestion that the Schema.org module dropdown interface might do well to work with microdata rather than just the current RDFa method. Based on the Google FAQ you pointed out I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

  • @deezone aw, thanks :)

  • I'm confused, what's the difference between what this module is trying to do and the "Schema.org" (drupal.org/project/schemaorg) module? Both appear to be connecting Drupal content type fields to terms detailed on Schema.org. Am I missing something?

  • @deezone Schema.org module provides a dropdown on the form. The terms are added to the HTML using Drupal's core RDFa support. However, Google has indicated in the FAQ that they won't read RDFa, they will only use microdata. This module allows you to use microdata.

The Schema.org module can most likely be changed to work with the microdata module as well, so that the dropdown of Schema.org terms can be used for microdata settings. I would be happy to see it if someone wants to make that work.

  • Nice work! You make it all too easy.

  • ... btw, sorry for the URI mess in #1 & #2 -- Youtube doesn't allow [the pasting of] complex links with queries. My user account on d.o. is drupal.org/user/174767, my username is @the_phi .

But then, on a second Google.com resource (/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py ? answer=1211158) from 22th of July 2011, one can read:

    ---

" […] Historically, we’ve supported three different standards for structured data markup: microdata, microformats, and RDFa. Instead of having webmasters decide between competing formats, we’ve decided to focus on just one format for schema.org […] ".

    ---

These statements seems to slightly contradict each other (#1 & #2)!
