Aaron and I met up with the gang on a Friday afternoon at a not-to-be-disclosed (and totally awesome) location, that may or may not be a playhouse somewhere in the greater Los Angeles area (a friend of Toby's happens to be an employee of said playhouse, and cleared us using it for a couple hours). The last time I met up with Toby to do some videos (while playing under the Horse Stories moniker), he played by himself at his house in Silver Lake, so it was a treat to have a couple other musicians there this time to fill out the sound (though, his songs do lend themselves nicely to stripped down, acoustic performances).

We had gotten together a couple weeks earlier to try and figure out where and when we might do this session. Toby had recently gotten back from Mexico City, where he recorded his latest batch of songs in an apartment his brother was living in downtown, and was looking for a big empty space that might capture the same kind of feel and echo that pervades the album. There is an incredible mood across the new record, almost permeating with a certain and heavy detachment. It may have something to do with how and where it was recorded, but may also just be a natural progression of his songwriting (which you can read all the nice things I've said about in the last session we did together). Either way, it's brilliantly genuine.
