Scottish Sculpture Workshop - Iron Pour - 26 May 2009

Artist Michael Stumpf prepares and casts in iron his piece for an upcoming exhibition. Using the Scottish Sculpture Workshop foundry, he is assisted by Eden Jolly (head technician), Steve Murray, George Beasley and Ginny Hutchison. Documenting the iron pour, and occasionally dancing across camera are fellow artists Jason Nelson and Charles Engebretsen. Hiding in the doorway in case their hair sets on fire are Michael "Mallet" and Kelly M. Anderson.


This Iron Pour was made during "A Garden Tale", a project for Gallery in the The Garden with Leith Hall. The Project was kindly supported by Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, National Trust for Scotland, Scottish Arts Council and Aberdeenshire Council.

May 2009 saw the opening of this exhibition, which brought together seven emerging artists from across Europe, to create a series of works inspired by the past and present of Leith Hall Gardens. When we were approached by the staff at Leith Hall to discuss working with them on the Gallery in the Garden event, it was an offer we couldnt refuse. said Hilary Nicoll, director of Scottish Sculpture Workshop. As a regular visitor to the beautiful gardens and hall, the tremendous possibilities for creating and exhibiting artwork were immediately clear.

Toby Loveday, head gardener at Leith Hall, approached Scottish Sculpture Workshop, with a view to hosting the exhibition in the gardens themselves. The idea of combining art and horticulture is far from a new one; sculptures have been a significant element of many of the worlds best-loved gardens for hundreds of years, declaring the owners wealth and position or as an expression of character and individuality. We hope that visitors will enjoy the fresh perspective of these historical and lovely gardens that this long awaited exhibition provides, and we look forward to Gallery in the Garden becoming an established and well-loved annual event.

Gallery in the Garden began with a special opening weekend on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 May, 2009, which was attended by over 250 people. The exhibition is now open until 30 August 2009.
