Very inspirational video man. Makes me want to change for the better. Even though im only 19 I still find that my stuttering sometimes takes over my life. Partially to blame is me cutting off from all social contact and buring myself in a cocoon revolving around video games. Being obese and having 0 self confidence wasnt helping either. It seems like for me my speech impediment is my biggest obstacle I'll have to overcome.

I find your story very inspiring as well. Recently, I had to introduce myself to the class. I couldn't even say my own name, I felt really embarrassed. What I find funny is that I've had this problem and it's been 'on and off' since 4th grade. I had it really bad, same with 5th grade. However I improved in 6th-8th grade. Now in 9th, it's gotten worse and I don't know why. Do you have any other techniques besides slowing down on speech and figure 8?

@Exuvium97 You will find a relationship with your stuttering and your current emotional state, if you are feeling down, less confident than usual, dont feel comfortable you might be more inclined to stutter worse.. maybe focus on areas of your life that make you happy, hang around people that you feel comfortable with. Test yourself in other areas of your life that will improve your overall confidence. Most important, dont let it get you down, remember your awesome :)

hi
i find your story very inspiring as it proves that stuttering can be overcome.
i'd like to comment on your first tip which was to "slow down your speech".
in regards to this, i find it very hard to implement this because i feel/sense that i am going to "block" every time i try to .............slow down my speech/Speak slowly.
is there any tips/advice you can offer me in regards to overcoming this psychological barrier, so that i can be able to speak more slowly.

@shannon5792 Basically it takes practise. Something you have to be careful of, and if you are doing it try to break the habit and that is starting sentences with jilted movements/breathing.
Hard to explain, everything has an effect, do figure 8 movements with your finger on your leg in your pocket, start out practising very slow talking in the mirror, dont stop talking, roll one word into another do you have no 'pauses', work up from there.

@madvk308
thanks for your reply.
i have 2 questions.
1. i didn't understand what you meant by the "figure 8 movement".......is it simply, drawing the number "8" on my leg with my finger while i speak.
2. also, with regards to the practicing in-front of a mirror..........should i speak slowly in front of a mirror until i have pauses.............then next time, i would try to speak for longer without pauses.
Regards, Shannon

@shannon5792 Hey Shannon, sorry for the late reply, yes, the figure 8's are just as you described. basically you want to avoid any 'jerky' movements, motions, this might just help do that. In regards to the mirror, practise everything.. the mirror can help you learn what bad mannerisms you have adapted while trying to get something out.. recognise them and help get around them. Practise slow speech, just practise speaking in general, get good at it in front of the mirror! :)
