The 64th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) is underway, with leaders of 192 countries discussing the worlds problems.

The 7-day annual gathering started on Wednesday. Barack Obama, the US president, Muammar Gaddafi, Libya's leader, and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's President, were some of the prominent leaders who addressed the session on Day 1.

Some of the key issues on the UNGA's agenda, include climate change, the Middle East crisis, and nuclear disarmament.

But a recurrent issue in the General Assembly's meetings in recent years, is the UN itself.

Is the US still relevant? What does it take for the organisation to fulfill its mission properly? And could it alone solve the world's many problems?

Inside Story, with presenter Maryam Nemazee, discusses with guests: Ahmad Fawzi, a former deputy spokesperson for Boutros Ghali, and current director of news and media at the UN, Yash Tandon, the former executive director of the South Centre, and
Ruth Wedgwood, a professor of international law and diplomacy, at John Hopkins University, and former US member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee.
