It seems like it would be hard to maneuver the staff if your hands are so far apart. I understand that there needs to be a certain amount of distance, but having them so far apart seems like it would do more harm than good.

I do agree but I think he just adds the row in so when your being tested on your staff skills with instructors it looks good.
If this has any relation to what you meant. Yes in a combat fight it would be a automatic swing and no row.
