For the Long Way Down Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman have travelled from John O'Groats, Scotland, down through Africa to the most southern point of South Africa -- Cape Agulhas. As with the Long Way Round, they stopped off along the way to visit UNICEF projects to raise awareness and funds for children.
The final UNICEF visit for Ewan and Charley was to Chimteka, a community-based child care centre which helps to care for children who have been orphaned because of AIDS.
Children can go to the centres every day to receive nourishing meals, basic healthcare and education. Perhaps most importantly, they are encouraged to learn and play, and have the chance to make friends and behave like children.
These centres are much-needed - over half a million children in Malawi have lost one or both parents because of AIDS and 15 per cent of the population is now living with HIV.
Ewan visited a number of these centres in Malawi in 2005 and has since helped to raise funds to support them. This was the first time that Charley had seen these centres in Malawi but in 2006 he visited similar UNICEF projects in Swaziland, which he has also supported.
