@Tobypaws2002 Ecce Beatam Lucem came first. The english heard this, and felt they needed to come up with something to contest it, so Tallis was commissioned to write Spem in Alium. You should go to the wikipedia page of Spem In Alium as there is more info on it

No, this is not Huelgas Ensemble's recording, which, in my humble opinion, is superior.

The Striggio came first. Tallis saw this as a challenge and composed what is widely considered the better of the two 40-part motets.

The same sort of 'soaring'/ 'light and shade'/silence/beautiful chord progressions, as Spem In Alium...I wonder which came first? Must try to find out if either Tallis or Striggio influenced the other?
Can anyone help, to save me hours of searching ?
