I saw this race about 1957. We were what we thought was a safe distance from the start,( miles away and up the side of a hill). The smoke bomb? lit off and in the distance far as we could see across the desert you could hear a roaring in the distance. In the beginning all we could see was a rising cloud of dust then a few bikes. Finally, they started coming by. First hundred of yards away, then closer. At the end we thought we would be hit by all those big desert sleds flying by. It was awesome!
