The Salesian Youth Movement has an international following and any young person can become a part of the group. This report captures one of the events that took place during the World Youth Day celebrations in Madrid. Young people came from all over the world to join their newfound friends in prayer, reflections and fun. This report was produced by Lawrence Maingi Mutiso and Kevin Otieno Juma, members of the SIGNIS Video Journalists training and production programme.

Script:
It is early morning and the breeze is so cool.

The Salesians of Don Bosco worldwide are gathered at a Salesian house in Madrid for prayer, reflection and fun - specially organized by the Salesian Youth movement (SYM).

The movement brings together young people, groups and associates who are recognized (believe) in the spirituality and in the educational and evangelical task (work) of Don Bosco and Mother Mazzarello - two famous Catholic saints who devoted their lives for the betterment of young people.

Some seven thousand pilgrims participated in the event at a Salesian school in Madrid

The youth were anxious before the event began. However as the day unfolded, with prayer and sharing, they became more comfortable with each other ... enthusiastic and looking forward to the party that brought the gathering to a close.

The event ended at midnight with solemn prayers (adoration)

The successor of Don Bosco - Rector Major of the Salesians Don Pascual Chavez and the Mother General of Daughters of Mary Help of Christians Sr. Reungoat Ivonne - were present and they gave their speeches and answered questions.

Some of the questions touched on secularism and on whether Christian values still hold.

The religious leaders responded by saying that young people should have a deep religious experience - deep in human values.

"In these days when the world is full of secularism, the youth still need to be firm in faith, re-discover their Christian roots and grow in Christ."

The Salesian youth movement's message to young people of the world is simple "be good Christians and honest citizens".
