Herman Cain in Detroit Introducing Opportunity Zones - Oct. 21, 2011

Click 'Show More' to see all ... herman Cain gave a speech in Detroit introducing "Opportunity Zones" in his 999 plan. In short, the entire USA is an opportunity zone if you are at or below poverty level, because then your tax plan will be 9-0-9 (no personal income taxes). Additionally, cities that have been economically devastated, such as Detroit, the corporate taxes will be reduced to zero so it is a 0-9-9 plan there.

Herman Cain's Opportunity Plan is the perfect way to get depressed areas of our country rocking and rolling again too. Instead of the federal government having to bail them out (like what Obama wants) these cities will be on their feet on their own. We might lose a very small bit a revenue, but it will come back to us 100 fold when they get their businesses going again. It will also attract business back from overseas... it truly is a WIN - WIN - WIN.

I began listening to Mr. Cain's debates and speeches from the beginning of his campaign. He has always presented that those that are in poverty would get a break. Initially, there was a plan to give them monies to bring them up over the poverty level - but it seems better to eliminate the tax for this group altogether. The point is this is not a sudden change in his plan, he just has not been as effective in defending it or people understanding it.

That is exactly why we need this tax reform. 1. It will simplify the tax code and ease the tax-compliance burden on businees so that they do have an incetive to lower prices. 2. The 9% sales tax will be a VAT. VAT taxes all levels of production. The 9% sales tax will only be tax at the consumer level when the consumption is made. That is why in know as a consumption tax. It will discourage consumption and encourage investment.

... as a small buisness i would now have to pay personal incom tax, some kind of corporate tax, local sales tax, and a federal sales tax. in most states i would already have a state income and sales tax to cope with. if i have to pay more for production, which i would through the sales tax, i have to pass that onto the consumer. and if the corporate tax is a vat, then i would have to pass that cost aswell. how am is supposed to get big enough to compete and drop prices?

thats a pretty large assumption. you are assuming that its a corprorate income tax, you are assuming that corporations wouldnt still pass their 9% , be it vat or income, onto the consumer. you are making your largest assumption in assuming that prices would come down. corporations have no incentive to lower prices if their consumers are already used to paying the higher price. small buisnesses wouldnt be able to get big enough to challenge the prices of the big corporations...

its called an excise tax. and it is the conservative position that if a tax is to be layed via article 1 section 8 of the constitution that it be done via a sales tax, and not through a tax on ones income. ron paul supports excise taxation and repealing taxes on income. to be clear, excises are a national sales tax but it its not the " fair tax ".the fair tax is a flat sales tax on all goods. excise taxes are appplied to specific goods and services.

Critics of the 999 plan say it would hurt low and middle income people becuae it would another sales tax. What people do not realize is that they already are paying a hidden sales tax because all the taxes upon business gets pass down to the consumer. Under the 999 plan business will have a big break in taxes with the elimination of the payroll taxes. That would significantly lower the cost of goods and services. The new tax would just replace the cost of hidden taxes.

Right now I'm thinking this country won't be able to jump too high too fast with flat tax or national sales tax. Perhaps in time, but for now I think Gingrich has it right with optional 15% and automatic 12,000 deduction (or something like that). I think the automatic deduction of at least 12,000 is one of the smartest ideas out there.
