This video shows the severely distorted current waveform taken by a conventional phase-angle control tungsten incandescent lamp dimmer.

Not only does the dimmer add a lagging phase shift to the current waveform, but it causes severe harmonic distortion leading to substantial harmonic currents.

Installations with large numbers of high-powered lamp dimmers (e.g. theatres) need to take precautions to avoid causing excessive pollution of the mains supply, including overheating electricity company transformers due to excessive harmonic production
