After three years of active service in Maryland, volunteer firefighters and EMTs are eligible for a $3,500 tax deduction from their MD State taxes. Some expenses like clothing and gas can be itemized as deductions. Also, after 25 years of active service and reaching age 65, there is a LOSAP program that awards a small amount of money to volunteers.
