Tour Update (25FEB2012): Iowa's main deck forward of the superstructure is currently open on weekends from 10am to 4pm. When painting of the bow starts, the stern of the ship will be opened for display. HOPEFULLY the Officer's Ward Room and other parts of the ship MAY be opened up. Currently looking to depart May 27th. Also note that the SS Red Oak Victory is about 15 minutes away and open on SATURDAYS. Check BB-61's web site for official updates:

The Battleship USS Iowa (BB-61) is moved from the "Mothball Fleet" in Suisun Bay to the Port Of Richmond, CA, for painting. Boy I wish the San Francisco Bay Area could have gotten it's act together to host this ship but at least now it's heading off to a good home. And many thanks to the nice folks of the Crow's Nest community.

Godspeed to Iowa and her crew.

  • Beautifully done. A documentary that tells its story with pictures rather than words. Wonderfully conceived. May I ask what gear you used to shoot it with?

  • @newsmaninla Thank you for the nice comments.

    I'm currently using a Sony HDR-FX7 camera.

  • Amazing, beautiful editing and quality. Greg Bishop, Pacific Battleship Center photographer. i was aboard Iowa shooting on day 1, shoreline day 2. I was onshore at Benicia by the RR depot (out near the pilings); I believe you were on the point with a tripod, wearing a hat?

  • @Konabish Yep..., that was me. Originally I was going to go to the hill west of the port but then I went over to that other park on the point. What a beautiful day it was.

  • BTW, again great job, what type of camera are you using?

  • @fjcaron Many thanks for the nice comments.

    I'm currently using a Sony HDR-FX7 camera.

  • Is her engines disabled?

I was onboard USS Camden which had the defunct BB Kentucky engines along with her sister, the USS Sacramento, and they are very similar to the Iowa's mains.

Now, I'll tell ya, those engines are POWERFULL. Even thou we only had two, we could get up to 35 knots no sweat... I wouldn't mind working on the Iowa's engines, would be a blast =D

  • Too bad she wasn't under her own power one last time.

  • She is going home! God Speed IOWA...

  • @Paralleler I'm assuming you did this amazing video!! Thanks for posting this and marking the occasion in her life. It's cool to see people still care about history. I will probably never have the chance to see her because I live in Pinehurst NC. Although we do have an Iowa class in Nauticus in Richmond Va. Seriously, thanks for posting this!!

  • It was an amazing day, an incredible when the sunlight hit her 'broadside'! I caught her again all along the route all the way to Richmond. You can follow her stay if you have facebook (/pacificbattleship). My photos are on Flickr - search konabish. I'l still uploading photos and video. Again, beautiful video!

  • I served with sailors that were stationed on Her, and the pride of serving on her was great.

Why they took her out of commision is a mystery that cannot be answered, the sight of these Iowa class Battleships were a great deterent to those that would cause harm to this country.

She may have age bumps, but she is still beautiful.

I'll be there to see her in her new port with her fanciest paint on.
