Economic freedom is on the wane—both in the United States and around the world, according to Robert Lawson, co-author of the new Economic Freedom of the World report, released Tuesday. The O'Neil Center professor says the latest rankings put the United States 10th in the world, down from 3rd in 2000. Key factors in the U.S. decline are massively higher government spending and borrowing and dramatically lower scores in various measures of property rights.
