The story after: England lose to Pakistan unluckily in a deadly dull, washed out home series in 1987: Ashes-winning captain Gatting is best batsman. '87/8 return tour of Pakistan and Gatt (rightly) gets pissed off with the pisspoor Pakistan umpires. Selectors now gunning for Gatt. He leads England to a solid draw against the WI in '88 1st Test, but is then fired after The Sun prints a pack of lies about him and a barmaid. Implosion followed by long decline follows. Lions led by donkeys? Always.

At the time, I enjoyed winning this one-day series, beating the all-conquering Windies on the way, more than beating a feeble Australia in the Ashes. Of course, I didn't know that it would be 18 years before our next Ashes victory at the time, or I would have appreciated the latter more.

It would be interesting to see how someone like John Emburey would go in this modern era of shorter boundaries and giant bats.
Bill Athey was such a good catcher at mid-wicket. It's a shame he couldn't cement a long-term spot in the England side.

Great Day for England during the peak period for the Windies.
