GRANDIOS! Ein brillianter Gurnemanz, ein jugendlicher glänzender Parsifal, eine unvergleichliche Inszenierung! Ein großes BRAVO an das Gesamtkunstwerk!

Without much exaggeration I can claim easily that I never saw anything like this (and I mean not only Wagner operas, but opera in general) !!! It is more than mind blowing : Everything is there : Jesus's birth, his circumcision -like Klingsor ? - and the transformation of his body into bread and vine (to be served to German soldiers of WWI), all of Oedipus and a variety of Freudian mythos, German history ...I cannot finish enumerating everything. . Not to mention Klingsor as a bisexual, etc...

I have seen lots of things like this -- in fact it's hardly possible to see a staging that isn't -- and I can only agree with you. One or two stagings like this might be healthy -- it's more meaningful than most -- but deconstruction has become a deadly orthodoxy.

And I saw the PARSIFAL at Bayreuth in 1957 and 1959, the famous Wieland production.... utterly amazing!

The answer is none of it. He wouldn't have wanted it. It bears no relation to the libretto and stage directions whatsoever and is an utterly twisted reading of the text. It can only be the product of an ill-informed; talentless poseur.

None of which has anything to do with Wagner's Parsifal. Klingsor isn't circumcised;he castrates himself to stop his sexual urges. He's not Jewish and neither is Kundry.Nor is there any homosexuality involved. These flights of fancy were introduced into the Wagner database by Robert Gutman in the 1960s.Most Wagner productions accept Gutman's ravings as fact and so it is now given that Parsifal is about racial purity at the expense of the Jews. This reading is perverse and, quite frankly. bullshit.

I first saw Parsifal at Bayreuth in 1976.I couldn'tget tickets for the Ring so i "settled" for Parsifal and Tristan. Tristan that year was excellent but Parsifal was the most intense musical experience i have ever had. I think Peter Hoffman sang the lead role and he actually looked young and innocent. The production was by one of the Wagner grandsons and to this day cannot be surpassed.

No productions since then have got anywhere near what the composer wanted.

But how much of that did Wagner actually want in his opera?

Wonderful performance! I have seen a lot of Parsifal performances but this is the best.
