I like Paul's message: "There are too many choices, so settle for an IBM PS/1 and be done with it." Also you might be right about Pagemaster -- the movie also had a tie-in with Pizza Hut and I have a couple internal promo materials (yay, nametags!) to prove that lump of poo film existed.
