Clicker Training Your Horse to Take Wormer

In this video we look at the process of clicker training Koa, a rescued mustang, how to enjoy being wormed. It's a straightforward process that you can use with your horse to get them to actually enjoy being wormed.

The process starts with basic targeting, where Koa earns a click for touching the wormer with her nose. As I continue to click her for targeting, she begins to offer stronger behavior.

I increase my criteria slightly and withhold the click until she touches the wormer with her lips. Soon she is holding in her mouth herself and even nibbling on the end.

We build duration, asking her to hold it for longer and longer to earn the click.

Soon she is ready to have the wormer squirted. Although the taste is strong, she is quickly back to offering the behavior of taking the wormer in her mouth to earn a click.

By taking a little time to work through this process with your horse, you will quickly build a behavior that will allow you to worm easily and quickly for the rest of the horse's life.

Did you squirt some of the wormer in and then take it out again without squirting the whole thing? Also how long did the whole process take? Was it just the 5 minutes of the video or did you cut some parts out to make it shorter?

It was the 5 minutes of the video and gets shorter every time. The next time should be around 1 min.
