"...if you don't like Delco Nightingale, then you don't like ice cream."

Delco Nightingale is a recent addition to the Philadelphia music scene, bringing a rockin new twist to swing era classics. This group of musical personalities is comprised of vocalist Erin Berry, guitarist Greg Phoenix, upright bassist Sean Thomas and drummer Brian Turner. These musicians infuse their individual expertise in jazz, rockabilly, live theatre and outsider music to create a uniquely swinging sound. Their goal is to bring these cleverly written, fun and romantic songs not only to nostalgic listeners of big band standards, but also to a new audience whose familiarity with this music may not go beyond glances of WWII films and perused record collections from the family credenza.
DN recently returned from recording with Quentin Jones of Lanark Records and Reach Around Rodeo Clowns renown. The band was determined to record in a manner reminiscent of the old studio recordings, and after a search for an authentic analog old-school studio sound, they found their match with Mr. Jones. Both of these newest tracks (Slap That Bass, an ode to the upright penned by Gershwin, and Yes My Darling Daughter an innuendo-filled 1941 Jack Lawrence tune based on a Ukrainian folk song), were recorded completely live without a single punch-in, overdubbing only the boys backing vocals on Darling Daughter.
Delco Nightingale is creating a steadily growing buzz in the Philadelphia area, with several upcoming local shows including the annual Trenton Avenue Arts Festival in mid-May as well as a date at Tritone in June. They have also been invited to play the Heavy Rebel Weekender in Winston-Salem, NC in July, and will be introducing a few new cities to their unique brand of swing on their way down.
They arent quite jazz, they arent quite rockabilly; what they are may be defying any readily available labels, but the unique sound they have created together is certain to garner converts from any genre. As Quentin Jones said, if you dont like Delco Nightingale, then you dont like ice cream. But if youre a fan of a clever lyric, a beautiful melody or a swinging beat you can dance to, then Delco Nightingale delivers on all counts.
