This is a natural swimming pool we designed and built in Kettleby, Ontario in 2006. Native aquatic plants are used as an 'organic cleanser' to help filter the water in an area surrounding the swimming zone, thus no chemicals are needed (ie.chlorine). A series of waterfalls, a skimmer and a pump help aerate the pool.

  • What kind of "critters" does the pool attract? I don't mind some, but snakes are a no go for me.

  • @billyshears666

These pools will attract water insects, many species of frog, and turtles, all good signs of a healthy ecosystem. And you may see a snake hidden in the boulders, depending on where you live, although it's rare.

  • Just have to say, that looks marvellous. We're in Nova Scotia, and I'm considering doing something similar (though admittedly on a smaller scale). Our soil is dense clay, and we have lots of rainfall. Do you think I might be able to do without a liner?

  • @Llyranon

Liner is still a good idea. It's relatively inexpensive and will help keep your water levels consistent.

  • Wow! This is just unbelievably inspiring! Thanks for this!

  • I'd love to go swimming in there, beautiful job!

  • i love your pond it looks so beutiful i would love to swim in it with my mermaid tail!!

  • I love native plants and the pretty columbine, black-eyed Susan and echinacea made my day. Lovely pool. I think I need a special permit to build a "pool" in my area, but I"m going to try to get away with one. I'm starting on a pond first. I guess the only hazard would be possible bacterial buildup... I think you only need calculus in order to create the pool. I think anyone can make one, at least a shallow one...As long as the "filter" area is constructed properly and there's a pump.

  • We are a group of aquatic biologists for those in North America interested in swimming pondswith beaches & streams that look like actual natural ponds and lakes.

  • We have great places to swim in Grey and Bruce County, Ontario also. COme check out our videos of the area around Sauble Beach!
