NASA scientist Jennifer Heldmann describes the most popular theory of how the Earth's moon was formed.

-----

Let's talk about the moon.

In my opinion it's the best celestial body to observe - it's big enough to see in captivating detail without a telescope and it doesn't thank you for your wonderment by burning out your eyeballs. And while it may lack the kaleidoscopic coloring, dynamic vitality, and exotic mystery of some of the other local orbs, our moon is the old friend we wouldn't want to lose.

Tonight we'll learn all about our trusty sidekick — the theories on its formation, predictions about its future, its internal structure, its geological past and present, and the many ways in which it affects the earth.

We'll discover how the moon impacts our climate, how it got locked in a synchronous rotation with the earth, how tides work, and why some scientists suggest that without the moon life on earth may never have developed - Ask a Scientist

Dr. Jennifer Heldmann has worked closely with the Astrobiology Academy at NASA Ames Research Center for the past five years to conduct research regarding the habitability of other planets. Heldmann also worked at NASA Ames under the direction of Dr. Chris McKay on a variety of projects including extreme physical conditions supporting life in Antarctica, collecting experimental data regarding the soil chemistry of martian simulant soils, and conducting field work in the Mars analog environment of the Canadian High Arctic to study cold perennial springs flowing in polar desert conditions. Heldmann has also participated in simulated Mars missions by living in Mars habitat modules and is very excited for the promising future of Mars exploration. Heldmann is now working at the NASA Ames Research Center as a National Research Council Post-doctoral fellow during this very exciting time of solar system exploration.

  • @2184roberto There's always one contrarian in every youtube comment section. Did you take 'speech and debate' in high school? My oldest did, and she corrects everyone now, including her dad who has a masters degree!

  • If you took out the words "so", "um", "like", and "basically", this video would only be 20 seconds long. Where are the educated people? What an elementary and oversimplified explanation; must be a presentation to a 3rd grade class.

  • that loose bun ponytail is turning me on so fucking much!!!!

  • man, i would do her in a heartbeat!

  • The moon isnt real the CIA invented it

  • So does 'differentiation' explain the rocky (heavy) inner planets too?

  • Someone send this video to Bill O'Reilly!

  • @tanarus77 "the sun and during a eclipse with the distance almost completely covers it perfectly"

The moon is 400times closer than the sun by coincidence. On Apollo 15 mission reflectors were left on the moon. everyday for the past 40 in new Mexico, photons of light are shot at the moon which reflect off the mirrors and return to earth. over the past 40 years it has been observed that the moon is moving away at 3.8cm per year. so eventually there wont be a perfect eclipse

  • Doesnt explain why the moon is hollow, doesnt explain how it can be one fourth the size of the earth, compared to all the other planets in the solar system do not have a moon in comparable size to itself.. Doesnt explain how it is 400 times smaller then the sun and during a eclipse with the distance almost completely covers it perfectly. Nasa = half truths. Nasa = government agency. So you do the math.

  • No the planets where formed by mind...energy of the mind. Strange Hu?
