No, he doesn't die. The movie doesn't portray the book well. What actually happens, in beforehand, Thowra and the unmentioned Storm, find a way down into the hidden valley, so he knows that he can jump safely down.
The actual chase were he jumps, happens after a brumby round up, i'm sure, from which he escapes.
In the following books, (silver brumbys daughter, silver brumby's of the south and silver brumby kingdom) Thowra and his heard, including his daughter(live in the valley apart from...

@robynchoochoo um, don't know about the rose, but Bel Bel is his mother. i have the one of the special edition books with the family trees and there is no rose to speak of.

That last monologue at the end - when I first heard that as a child, that was when I realised English "sounded" good. I was only able to understand the translated subtitles but I could hear her voice and how she used it and I was just... "wauw...". Now, many years later, I still love that monologue ^^
