Katharine was just too intelligent and independant as a woman of her generation to be fully understood by anyone in the media, she threatened the status quo and attempts to pigeonhole such a unique woman will always fail.

while I admit that Barbara did ask the silliest interview question i've ever heard; I am sort of thankful she asked that question because now I know Katharine's favorite tree and its just pleasing to know those little facts about poeple you admire.

Plus Johnny Carson was right on the mark by his comment about being a tumbleweed (that's what made him such a good late-night host)

Barbara Walters is an actress the way Oprah is an actress. Playing the part of interviewer but they don't really care, it's their job or something. They are constantly performing, but it's not anything sincere, it's just acting.

Why is that so hard to believe? I mean Katharine is a clear sign this is true. Now I'm not saying just cause someone is an actor or actress they are automatically intelligent. We all know that's not true. However, you're naive if you don't think it takes a good amount of intelligence to imitate another life, to become a whole different person. IMO they are the keenest observers of human nature and not everyone can do it.

I think Kate got half way through answering before her years of being in the public mind made her think "Hmmm maybe it could be taken the wrong way." so she changed her tone. But I'd bet everything I own that Kate meant that in the worst way >:)

I totally agree. I am finding Barbara Walters very aggressive, actually. It sounds like Katharine Hepburn only responded this way (the "I'll wear it at your funeral" answer) as a mechanical defense kind of thing.
