Ellen is interesting on so many levels, but here is an interesting skill that I admire so much...

She gets that woman in the plad to really "open up" -- I mean like almost "heal" before our eyes. Is it just me?

I think Ellen is a Tele-Healervangelist. What do you think?

This is SO funny. Do you remember when this was on? The date. Also do you have anymore clips like this?

This would have been Spring of her first season I think...

The first season was pretty cool. I came on just as they began the "field" pieces that were so popular in the beginning. I was her only editor on the field pieces. Pieces like these are totally built in the bay, because they are so improv-driven.

They were written ahead of time by Ellen and the brilliant writers, revised as they were shot, and then roughly assembled by the field producer. I would pull it all together, give it a flow, look, feel, and a coherent story... then of course do all the fancy editing tricks.

The hard part isn't the tricks... In comedy, it's all timing... and in front of a live audience like Ellen, you have to not only anticipate the laughter at home, you have to anticipate it in the live audience -- which lingers about a 1/2 second longer than you would anticipate.

I've cut comedy, drama, education, science, commercial, promo, day of air news, etc.... Comedy is by far the hardest and most rewarding when it works. I will upload a piece without the audience and if you care to, you can watch and compare the timing with real live laughter and without... it's an editor issue, but it impacts whether the audience likes the show.

I'm pretty sure, way back when Ellen wasn't yet so famous, these people didn't care a lot about her. But now that she's a HUGE CELEBRITY, these people would probably do everything to get Ellen back to their houses!
