Sonic Boom Heard in Seattle

Two Air National Guard F-15s out of Portland International Airport went supersonic over the continental U.S. Tuesday, and the sonic booms were caught on local videos. The jets had been dispatched by NORAD. They had been granted permission to go supersonic to intercept an aircraft that was wandering near airspace that had been temporarily restricted during a Presidential visit to the region. The first video was shot in Seattle by a local news crew; the second, apparently by a local mother.

The booms shocked many local residents who flooded 911 facilities with calls. The pilot of the small plane, a Cessna 180 on floats, was not met by the jets in the air but by Secret Service agents on the ground. Pilots are responsible for checking for temporary flight restrictions, but the restrictions are often posted with little notice in order to obscure the President's schedule. The FAA will determine what, if any, penalties the Cessna pilot will face.

Contacting the pilot via radio isn't as easy as you might think. It's not just one single radio frequency but many, many hundreds of unique frequencies. And, outside of the specific airspace for specific towered airports there is no requirement for the pilot to be talking to anyone.

These Presidential TFR's often come up with very short notice. If a pilot has been flying in the rural back woods for a few days and then flies back to civilization he/she may encounter this problem.

Why would you call 911 without even being able to provide them with any type of information? I can just imagine the type of calls they got "Uh I heard something really loud but I don't know what it was. Uh I don't know the source or direction from which the sound came from if that helps. I certainly hope my inability to provide you with any other information helps you in deciding who or uh what to dispatch. Uh By the way I'm glad I could help"
