  • Tomiki, perhaps the first(?) 8thDan awarded by Ueshiba, was also equally highly ranked in Judo. Following the Judo model of competition, he introduced competition in Aikido. So when you see Nariyama and Shishida tearing at each other at the end of the clip (randori geiko), there is no cooperation there, but rather full resistance and counter. In practice there is cooperation at beginners level, though at more advanced levels you have practices from some to 100% resistance and counters.

  • The difference between Aikikai and Tomiki is like taking the stairs and riding the escalator. Aikikai being the stairs where you climb a step at a time and analyze each step. Tomiki being, in my opinion, a smoother and quicker ride to the top of the same mountain. Neither is better however, having said that Tomiki tends to be more robotic(shades of Judo) and Aikikai being more confusing and elusive.

  • so this is how robots fight

  • Very good stuff! I was looking to see sensei Tomiki in action and now I'm happy! It is also very well to see how the competition in aikido is actually working. Thank you for sharing!!!

  • Having taken a few of those gedan ate's from Nariyama Sensei as a young man I can tell you they leave a mark.

  • nice

  • @anthonysmith73 The Tomiki system collects the many, many movements and techniques of the Ueshiba system into an ordered set so that it can be learned more quickly. The Tomiki student enjoys a more regulated (and in my opinion, safer) flow from beginner through dan rank whereas the Ueshiba student tends to see more variations on the techniques.
