An early American holiday tradition was the annual Christmas bird hunt.
During the 1800s, participants competed to bag the most wild birds.
In 1900, bird lovers banded together and started an alternative to the hunt, the Christmas Bird Count.
Now, Audubon Society bird clubs throughout the country conduct counts around Christmas time.
About 40,000 participants go afield for one day and list the number of individuals of each species they see.
Their findings, when gathered together, answer questions such as, "how are the bluebirds doing?" and "what new birds are showing up?"
I never understood the concept of counting birds. Thanks for explaining it. Nice video.
