this has the exact same problem as the one you said was total crap because of hexagons crossing eachother. when I get to the point of beveling it all the edges inbetween the holes produces a middle edge that is dragged down with the hexagons which represents the holes, making the result after mesh smooth or turbo smooth complete failure. Im using 3ds max 2012 though, but why would this procedure change? Im at my exams so if you have a quick answer Id be very happy.

golf balls have more dimples than that theres enven smaller ones in between the big ones

@WhatYouCantGetEnough This tutorial is basic, the "golf ball" you can make in this video isn't an "exact replica" but something similar. If you want to make more holes you can subdivide - extrude vertices - subdivide again.
