It is passing strange that some people believe that "meta-physics" is merely a "going beyond" the "physical" to the "mental" rather than a going beyond BOTH to what is truly metaphysical, i.e. Nothing. What a set of total chumps today's philosophy students seem to be ! What the hell happened to wonder's being the "Mother of Philosophy" ? Has NO-ONE read Heidegger properly ? Or just no-one on YouTube (that wouldn't be very surprising).
Once again : what is the difference between science (physics) and philosophy (meta-physics) ? What is a proper understanding of physis ? Is it the "physical" as opposed to the "mental" ? Or is the "physical" already supposed to INCLUDE the mental so that "meta-physical" immediately takes on a completely different meaning ? The "meta-" does not go beyond merely to "the mind" - that is a complete insult to metaphysics - it also goes BEYOND THE MIND. Yes, the mind needs to go beyond even ITSELF !
Philosophy needs to distinguish itself from "science" again. How the hell did philosophy become the slave of science when science is 100% philosophy when you analyze it ? What has happened ? Why is every little "scientific" pr*ck of more importance in the minds of not only the public but also of Academe than the philosopher ? What is happening ?
"Science" is hocus pocus. Every day we read, via the newspapers, internet etc., that some new discovery has been made. But all science is is the (incredibly big-headed) application of an extremely dubious metaphysical theory which is no longer questioned by anyone because all the thinkers have either fallen asleep or chickened out of the fight. "Science" is, from a philosophical point of view, a joke. It complains about the state of the world and yet it has CAUSED it !
@roryscanlon The portrait of Christ is in Twlight of the Idols but I can't locate it at the moment. It's certainly there though : I wouldn't make such a claim up. As for Dostoyevsky, the portrait of Christ in The Idiot is a masterpiece. All of his works are masterpieces. Heidegger regarded him as one of the two "masters of spirit" of the 19th century.
Heidegger does not confound Plato's philosophy with science but he sees the seeds of what later became science in Plato's idealism
@zarakhast ) Sure Heidegger a la Nietzsche confounds modern science (say Descartes, Francis Bacon) with Platonism, and with Christianity. But they both do so by mere suggestion and assertion. In fact there's no reason to believe that they are of the same ilk. Transcendence, again, is the demonstrative difference.
.....
I would like to read the portrait of Christ if you know where it is.
I think this would work with Dostoyevski's the Idiot.
@roryscanlon 3) In this way the Sun is like Being itself. but the Sun is also a being, as an image is an image, a thought is a thought, and Being itself is.
It Transcends us. For we are finite. It is infinite and eternal.
So of course we do not yet understand "is", we never will. It is greater than our mere understanding... and our understanding must submit before he who is.
@roryscanlon 2) Plato gives us just such a Being=the being.
It is the Good. We see this clearly in the metaphor of the Sun.
The sun gives everything its light, its reality (to the intellect) and also its life. It is the way everything follows: the whole planet revolve around it, the plants live off it; animals see from it; and we see (even intellectually) from it.
It cannot be seen because of its own sheer reality; it is too bright.
@zarakhast) Nowhere does Plato say that Being cannot be a being. (as far as I know).
If it could not be a being, Being would not be identifiable at all. Nothing could be said of it, positively or negatively. It would "be" unthinkable (the direction of "post" modern).
Better to say that Being is all beings, all possible beings, all possible states of being: becoming, and more than this yet. Being is the transcendent being. it includes and eliminates all distinctions and times

@zarakhast I'm a fan of Dostoyevsky too, especially the Idiot. Although no fan of the anti-christ.
He throws out the baby with the bath water.
