On November 21, 2008, residents of Canmore took to the trails with handmade lanterns to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the 1988 Winter Olympics, of which Canmore was host to the Nordic events. The lantern procession was a symbolic representation of the torch relay, winding it's way through the forested trails of downtown Canmore and up to the Canmore Nordic Centre, one of our Olympic legacies. Along the route, residents of all ages joined together in a grand display of community spirit, taking in the entertainment provided by fire spinners, jugglers, singers, drummers, native dancers, and a bagpiper. Those who did not get the opportunity to make a lantern in the free lantern making workshops offered were provided with candles with wind protectors reminiscent of the small red torches we all carried in 1988.
