My collection was really slow. After 12 hours of packet scanning equaling 116,000 packets, I got only 12618 unique IVs.
Another option is aircrack-ng after installing under MacPorts

this does not work on lion. after selecting channels 1-11 and start scanning, it will freeze after a few seconds

You'll need to go up and actually crack the key from the network menu.

You don't need a dongle if you have one of the new(ish) Macbooks. Anything from Intel up should be fine. I haven't tried on Lion yet (I will soon), so I don't know if there are any known issues.
