I've heard that the actual playability isn't that good on the Variax. I mean, heck you've got skill, no doubt, but how does it play compared to an industry leader?

it's not a bad guitar from a player's perspective. no dead spots, low action, no buzz. i bought the $299 version, so it feels like a foreign-made strat, or at worst, a squier. i tried the 600, which did play better, but i wouldn't drop $700 for it. dusting off my real strat, there is definitely a difference, but for everyday playing and the amount of sounds that come out of the variax, it's an amazing deal.
