Victorians are being urged to prepare for the fire season with the start of Fire Action Week today.

Premier John Brumby, Emergency Services Minister Bob Cameron, and Environment Minister Gavin Jennings were joined by fire agencies and the Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley, to launch Fire Action Week, issuing a call to action to all Victorians to work together, to be fire ready.

The task for us all is to work together to make our State as fire-safe and fire-ready as possible," Mr Brumby said.

As we continue to learn the lessons of the terrible fires of February 2009 and drive the next stage of rebuilding in the communities affected, a new fire season is upon us.

Our Government led the first ever dedicated Fire Action Week last year -- a week dedicated to preparing homes and communities for the fire season.

While there's been a lot of rain and in some parts of the State - serious flooding - the wet weather has followed 13 years of prolonged drought and the fire risk is still very real. That's why this year's Fire Action Week will again be an important time for all Victorians to prepare.

I urge Victorians to take this time to find out more about your individual fire risk this season. Whether you live or work in a high bushfire risk area, or whether you are planning a summer holiday in the country or on the coast, it's vital that you are prepared."

The Victorian Government introduced the first dedicated Fire Action Week last year following the tragic February 2009 bushfires.

The 2010 Fire Action Week starts today and runs until October 17, culminating in a day of more than 20 community planning days across Victoria which are being held to give people the opportunity to learn more about assessing their fire risk and developing a fire plan.
