My daughter helped me build it (fun little winter project indoors) and it really does work!
The birds enter from the left, going for the food tray. When they step on the elevator arm it pivots down, and the only thing the bird can do from there is step through the one-way door into the holding area.
100% harmless to the bird, so you don't have to worry about eliminating songbirds, etc.
This downy woodpecker was released with no harm right after this video. (I couldn't hold the camera while getting him out.)
