It's not the first time an inflammatory, outrageous sign claiming to charge African-Americans an extra $1.50 at McDonald's has surfaced on Twitter.

But a year after it first appeared, the twitpic popped up again as the most trending Twitter topic over the weekend, prompting McDonald's to go into damage control and clarify that it was, indeed, a hoax.

The sign reads, "As an insurance measure due in part to a recent string of robberies, African-American customers are now required to pay an additional fee of $1.50 per transaction."

McDonald's tweeted back saying, "That Seriously McDonalds picture is a hoax," and responded to irate Tweeps who believed the prank with the tweet: "A senseless & ignorant hoax. We value all customers. Diversity runs deep in our culture - on both sides of the counter."

TechCrunch elaborated on the incident by pointing out that McDonald's was a victim of 'churnalism' or 'hamsterization' journalism, where stories are reposted in the absence of verifying facts.

Despite having appeared already in June of last year, the hashtag #SeriouslyMcDonalds, meant to express incredulity with the chain - appeared around 20 tweets a second, TechCrunch reported.

The 1-800 number posted at the bottom of the sign also directed callers to KFC.
