Ben Folds Five | One Angry Dwarf & 200 Solemn Faces - Directed by Peter Demetris
Originally broadcast on the Jack Docherty Show on Channel 5 UK in 1997.
From the director: As many of you have noticed this isn't a live performance. Instead it is a mime to a backing track. Unfortunately the Jack Docherty Show was a relatively low budget production. Although we had facilities to mic and mix a live band they were already absorbed on the house band. Even if we had the extra equipment to do a full live performance the production schedule wouldn't allow it as we only had one small stage and would have had to set stop recording for over an hour to set up a live band.
Ben Folds knew this when they were booked to come on the show and so decided to have some fun with the performance. They were not 'forced' to mime! Ben was actually late dropping the piano on the night but I slipped the shot into sync to make him look good! I still think this is one of the best performances we had on the series and although I would have loved to do it properly live it is very entertaining nonetheless. Peter Demetris

  • Video would be worthwhile if it didn't have the album version of the song dubbed over it. It's not as if Ben Folds Five are not good live, not sure why they would do this.

  • From the director: please see my response in the description section.

  • Always remembered seeing this and wondering if they took the piss cos the show wouldn't let them play live - Ben just slapping the keys and Robert's flapping away cos he's got them so loose!...

  • From the director: please see my response in the description section.

  • Appreciate the insight, it makes sense now and I agree, it's possibly a more entertaining vid than if they could've played live... Re: Ben dropping the piano - do you mean you've fixed it for YouTube cos I'm sure when I watched the original I thought he was late dropping it?...

  • Yes he was late dropping the piano. I slipped it into sync for this upload. Tough decision but it didn't make much difference to the performance which I thought was terrific.

  • So you were the director over 10 years ago? Nice.

  • And they're still better at acting than Christiano Ronaldo.

  • @Chezmat1 Do you not even bother reading the uploader comments when they're all the same?? Or the description for that matter.
