The 'German Professor' is Otto Nerz (1892-1949), the first manager of the German national football team, and this newsreel was shot during his 1923 trip to England as he collected training and tactical tips from the likes of West Ham (featured here). It clearly worked: Nerz built Germany into a formidable side, coming third in the 1934 World Cup. However, he was sacked after an early exit from the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and his Nazi Party membership meant that he spent the last years of his life in an internment camp after the war. (Michael Brooke)
