This is volume two of a series. Participatory media. It's not just digital. But digital technology has provided an open space for the widespread use and development of the historical phenomena that has manifested itself in a diverse variety of forms. Production of knowledge, ideas and culture has been dominated by relatively less participatory media such as TV, film, print media etc. If the opportunities for contribution to such production have become relatively more equitable and widespread, how can such phenomena change the oppressive and hierarchical social systems that we find ourselves in today? Will participatory media and so-called "citizen" media be swept up into the monopolistic culture industry where only normalized and predefined modes of creativity are accepted? Will collective intelligence smash the expert paradigm of knowledge & ideas? Wholly crap...what do you think?
