I've got one similar to those resin-sealed parts I took from a discarded electric fan. Only that it is labeled 5 uF 480V so this is a capacitor, and in accordance with the comment below the two wire are single core.
For the second question about what thos boxes are for, what wires are they as i thought they looked like co-ax.
If they are single core cables, they could be capacitors or filters (capacitor and coil in series or parallel), might be best to ask your father, otherwise sacrifice one by taking it apart, though that won't be easy by the looks of things.
Start from scratch, ONLY connect the spark gap to the transformer, start with a wide gap, turn it on to see if it arcs, if not, then reduce the gap, keep doing this until it only just arcs, (remember to turn off before adjusting), once you get a spark connect the tc circuit, you should not need to touch the gap again unless it wears out.
Follow the steps in my vid v=sYF2JkYPMeE first part is setting safety (not needed if your gap is parallel with trans), second part is setting the gap.
