Here in Seattle, things were a bit quiet for those of us night crew when Coast To Coast AM suddenly went off the air. AM 570, switched from talk radio to oldies... Blech. For two months, I had to resort to listening to Coast to Coast a day late via Mp3 player.
During this time, I played with many methods of ripping the stream and finally settled on one that worked for me. I have created a shell script for Linux(and presumably MacOS) which will automatically rip the stream and gather information about the show from the website.
As far as copyright infringement goes, proceed at your own discretion, but since George Noory suggests that you use the CC Witness to record Coast to Coast AM, I have a feeling that you are safe.
I used VLC to rip the stream, Links to dump the webpage into text format, and my best friends, cat, grep and sed to parse information. So at the end of the night, there will be an mp3 file with the date, name of the guest, and the topic. There is also a text file with a brief synopsis of the show.
For this script to work, VLC and Links need to be installed. Use at and cron to schedule this script to run, or use a program like Gnome Scheduler.
Download the script at: http://www.mirrorcreator.com/files/0VHZBDWY/coast.sh.tar.gz_links
Update: New Download
Here is the updated version: http://www.mirrorcreator.com/files/1UDMSBGL/coast.sh.tar.gz_links
Update: You will need to find a stream other than KIT AM because on the weekend they play "When Radio Was." Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy listening to old detective shows, but It's not Whitley Streiber talking about time travel. :) This script only works with mp3 streams. Alternatively you can use mplayer to download streams of other formats.
confusing as hell.
