This is a video essay on the scene where Sheriff Baker dies in Peckinpah's film "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid". The first quote is from Baker in the film. The second quote is from a 1973 article on Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid by Jan Aghed.
The scene was great and greater still in my opinion was that it involved character actors and not the stars of the film. Jack Elam, Chill Wills and the other great character actors in this film helped make it the great piece of cinema that it is. I think it's the lack of good character actors today that contributes to the blandness of many movies made today. There's no sense of fullness, no real personality in the people being depicted. Maybe because Hollywood no longer has the contract system?

Well, I liked this, but you didn't say a thing about Katy Jurado's contribution to the scene.
