What makes you successful?

Student: Enjoying your job.

Dr. O: Exactly. If you love it. Most top managers I know, do you think they work for the money?

Students: Yeah.

Dr. O: No. The really top managers who I knew, they really had so much money they didn't need it. And, that is the point. Many people...when you start your career...when I talk to students, they say, "I want to become an investment banker." Any idea why they want to be an investment banker? They don't know really what it is, like yourselves. ...Money, money, money...but that's not all.

OK, it should be fairly paid. It would be good if you earned a bit more than just 500 Euro. That doesn't necessarily have to be 500,000 or 5 million. And, the board members I've seen they didn't do it for the money, they did it for the passion. And, that is very important also a lesson to take. If you're passionate...by the way, I have to put that down as the first one is, "Passion"...then you don't mind. Because why also your parents are not switching off their phones. But why are they doing it? Do they like the job? They love the job. What happens if you do a job and you don't like it?

Student: You don't learn from it best.

Dr. O: You don't learn from it best. Anything else?

Student: You quit.

Dr. O: You quit. You get frustrated. People who get burnouts, and quite a lot of managers get that, it's not working. Somehow, the private life and the business life is not going coherent. And, that's something to watch. You pay your price.
