Phantasy Star was originally released on the Sega SG-1000 Mark III within Japan. The Sega Mark III had an optional Yamaha YM2413 FM sound chip, which gave it better sound capabilities than the NTSC-US and PAL Master Systems. The Japanese Master System would then have the sound chip built in. Therefore, the music in the Japanese version of Phantasy Star actually sounds different to other releases.

There is a border around the actual game picture as this video was taken from Phantasy Star Collection for the Sega Saturn. You can choose to either play it with the Sega Mark III sound specifications, or those found in other releases of the game.

  • Now hold on. In the description, you said you can choose the FM sounds or no FM sounds, how do you do that for the collections version?

  • @dezoriajin If you're talking about the Gameboy Advance version, the option isn't available. In the Saturn Collection version, it's an option in one of the start menus.

  • You could also use the meka emulator and record it with FM chip choosen. That is also another minus point for Saturn they never released it outside of Japan. I was so dissapointed with the Saturn i had great hopes but they screwed it. thx for the vid

  • I know; this is a part of my Phantasy Star Collection playlist, hence why it was recorded from the Saturn.

  • ahh i see i have to see your other vids aswell thx for the vids.

  • No probs! :)

  • Argh, this sounds like a thousand times better ;-;!

  • @Ander01SE Sure, 32 at once, but a palette of 64 colors overall. Have you read about how Yuji Naka wrote the 3d dungeon code in assembly? THAT is impressive!

  • im glad i found a hack of the japan version of the game in english

  • @sygo7g yeah, that would've been awsome. hell it almost sounds like music for a 16-bit game. well Mega Drive atleast :P

  • @nekomimi84 Specifically which start option is it available?

  • @sandwichsteen

I've probably read it sometime. My favorite game when I was a kid... well, I'm still a kid, just bigger and not as cute. >_<

  • @sandwichsteen

Pretty sure that's only 32 colors on screen out of a 64 color palette. Even more impressive is that the whole game is only 0.5 Megabyte.

  • @GlitterOutlaw Well... you are right.
