At the beginning of the 1880 the physician Bernhard Hagen -- employed at that time at a plantation in Sumatra -- organized different expeditions to unknown territories around the Lake Toba and the island Palembang. In 1905 he used a phonograph to record music and chants of the ethnic group of the Kubu. These early and extremely rare recordings of xenoglossy allow the listener to hear magical chants of a shamanistic nature calling upon the spirits. There is a simple monotonous percussive accompaniment providing a pulse for the voice.

Anfang der 1880er-Jahre unternahm der promovierte Mediziner Bernhard Hagen -- zu jener Zeit als Plantagenarzt an der Ostküste Sumatras tätig -- mehrere Expeditionen in die damals noch unbekannten Gebiete um den Tobasee und durchquerte die Insel Palembang. 1905 führte ihn eine erneute Reise nach Sumatra, auf der er Musik und Gesänge des Stammes aufzeichnete.
Auf diesen sehr frühen und seltenen Aufnahmen von Xenoglossie hört man gesungene Zauberformeln, mit denen Schamanen ihre Geister anrufen. Eine einfache, monotone Trommelbegleitung gibt den Rhythmus für die Stimme vor.
