Agenda: A workshop by Princeton University`s Center for Information Technology Policy brings together experts from computer science, law, politics and industry to explore the social and policy implications of `computing in the cloud`.

"Computing in the cloud" is one name for services that run in a Web browser and store information in a provider's data center — ranging from adaptations of familiar tools such as email and personal finance to new offerings such as virtual worlds and social networks.

  • Right now we are using Internet 1

this is Internet as we know it!

Internet 2 is slow phase to HI-Jack the internet CLOUD COMPUTING! Microsoft is trying to sell this, DON"T BUY IT!! Unless you want to just through your computer out the window! You will now hear this term more and more! It is a internet monopoly! Look up “ Internet 2” on youtube Major Internet companies are Lobbying w/google spread the word GOOGLE AND Other Servers will take our entire free internet away! You've been Warned!

  • this is stupid, this guy has no idea what he's talking about

  • @Downfromzero, come on! I was just trying to be ironic! Of course they are not the same language although the use the same alphabet. And this is basically what you stated when you said that "HTML/XML are basically the same thing" just because both are mark-up languages.

  • I think that's why I implied returning HTML to the Client was ok, but if this is describing Web Services (instead of solely Cloud Computing) then XML would be used in most SOAP and I believe REST services on the POST side.

  • XML is really information overload. Even though AJAX is a term originally designed for XML transactions, hence the "X" in AJAX, databases that return pure HTML back is actually better; that, or JSON, or delimited text. XML creates a huge performance impact because there is massive overhead over the net.

  • To add, I wouldn't list just 1 lang for any of those, except JavaScript. SQL is not the only lang that accesses a data store. PHP can be replaced by Perl, C#, Java, any lang used in CGI. In addition to HTML: XSL/XHTML.

Again, not listening to the whole presentation, my guess is that they are using SOAP or some other Web Service, which is why XML is used. I don't like XML b/c of the massive overhead used. A better alternative: JSON

I welcome your ignorant responses to year old comments.

  • I'll be honest, I didn't sit through this whole thing, it was very boring. I'd also like to add that your analogy is retarded. English and Spanish are not basically the same language, Spanish is latin based, while English is Germanic based w/ some words of Latin origin. After listening to that portion of the presentation again, the point that they are not the same in this context is correct.

  • @Downfromzero, Spanish / English are basically the same language, which is why they both use the same alphabet. English is more North American oriented.

Your comment is a monument to the Ignorance.

  • Excellent introduction.

  • XML is language for describing data.

AJAX uses XML for back and forth information delivery.

HTML is language for describing information to end user.

So language description on 24:00 is ok.
