Learn how the best flowers and plants to plant in fall for healthy, hardy flowers that will bloom in the spring.

Fall is a good time to plant all things, from flower bulbs and perennials to trees and shrubs. The ideal time to plant in the fall is about 6 weeks before the first hard frost.

In the fall, warmer soils encourage root growth. Roots continue to grow until the ground freezes. In spring, new roots develop faster and are more capable of supporting the plant's new top growth.

Fall plantings become well established in spring and are better able to deal with summer's heat and drought. They also require less watering due to cooler fall temperatures and fewer disease problems.

  • great video i have a few questions hope you can help me.i live in the north east.back in mid may i dug up some daffodil bulbs and tulips.placed them loose in pots to store on the porch.also i have a few hyacinth bulbs from spring plants i bought back in may.i plan i moving these bulbs to another garden will they be safe to plant next month or can i do it now? are the bulbs still any good since they are no longer in the ground?

  • @SnowWhiteDove7 Generally speaking, bulb planting takes place in the fall. Tulip and daffodil bulbs should be fine to replant but be sure they are firm when you squeeze gently. This ensures that the bulb is still in good condition! Tulips require cooler weather in order to bloom each spring so plant tulips when it is 60 degrees or colder.
