...well lightwave 10 was released today...so now you know that this is actually the VPR from ligtwave 10

it handles nodes quite well.
however there are some things in the node editor it won't render like SSS materials and a few of the other materials (car paint)
it won't render any post effects (like lens flare, glow etc). and a lot of the time if you do an f9 render it looks nothing like the VPR preview (especially dielectric surfaces)
its good enough to set up your basic scene, lighting etc. so it's not going to save us from the F9 key just yet.

this feature isn't exactly new to lightwave.
Worley labs Fprime plugin for LW has been doing exactly the same thing for years (only Fprime does it a lot faster)

@chemicalBR0 yeh, i agree, i bought Fprime years back, though VPR is a in the box solution not an extra purchase.

how hard have you pushed a node setup with VPR? Still on the fence about upgrading.
