Black woman hires 13 of her relatives for city job Nepotism gone crazy
A grandmother who oversees the bus system for Broward schools keeps her family and friends close, very close.

Over the years, at least 13 of Lucille Greene's relatives plus six close family friends have found work in the Transportation Department, district records show. They drive and fix buses, type, file and plan routes, among other tasks. Together they earn about $500,000 a year.

Some of the staffing choices appear questionable. Greene's grandson was fired for various infractions in District Maintenance, including sleeping on the job, then rehired by Transportation. He now repairs tires.

And a granddaughter became a bus driver despite prior citations for speeding, driving with a suspended license, failing to comply with child restraint rules and leaving a child unattended in a vehicle.

How the Transportation Department's organizational chart came to resemble Greene's family tree is now of widespread interest within the school system.

"We don't know of any other department within the district where a director has so many relatives and close associates, such as godchildren and children of godchildren, working within their area of supervision," said Broward Teachers Union spokesman John Ristow. "It defies logic that having this many people working within her department is just a coincidence."

Shortly before Thanksgiving, Greene and her boss, Transportation Director Ruben Parker, were reassigned. The district launched an internal investigation of the department but won't say why. This week, School Superintendent Jim Notter said the investigation was "too big" for the district to handle and was turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
