Wow, awesome job on teaching Nina. Your students hard work and application is evident. Please pass on my compliment. The only thing I note is that i didn't see any guys =( I say this only because i am surrounded by people who think the flute is a femine only instrument(though your student's playing would argue).

Not to sound rude, but marching band and soloing are two totally different types of playing music.
Yes, keeping your flute in marching band parallel on the field is very important, but when you're soloing, it's almost as if you may do whatever you wish.
Just keep this in mind. :)

Hi nina. How does one go about attending your class *shifty eyes* i plan on majoring in Music Education/Education and flute, and your teaching approach is very easy to use/comprehend. Now, of course, I have a few more years to go.. and Im not sure how easily scholarships would be available Trans-State. But who knows...

No instrument is feminine IMO. No thing in music should be or is. Percussion is usually thought of as masculine. But alas, its not. Its a more recent thing to see more women in perc. (aside form pit of course)
But i assure you its not =) Seeing as I play the flute. And last time i checked i was male =)

All music is real music, though I too am tempted to feel that way about Marching Band, mostly because I feel it has no educational/intellectual value, and it saddens me that often brilliant young musicians only ever play in marching band and never learn to play challenging and intellectual music, or have a chance to discover their true potential. It has its place, and it's enjoyable to those who like it, but it ends there basically...

That may work for marching band, but if a serious flute student or performer who practices/performs for several hours daily played "Parallel" they would have tendonitis/carpal-tunnel injuries within a month. That kind of thing should only be observed when marching. Flutists who play solo and in concerts should play however they need to in order to avoid injury. Marching Band techniques really don't have apply to the classical music world.

I wanted to stab myself with a pen though in college when Jean would tell me to roll way out at first, but it didn't take long to get used to, and trying to practice it using technical exercises T&G (in addition to Moyse de la Sonorite) was much more effective than immediately trying to apply it to repertoire.
One thing that these students are learning that is APPARENT is TONE. What gorgeous tone these students are learning from you Nina. Open, free...I learned much the same way from Jean Rosenblum at University of Southern Maine. I'm trying to roll out and re-discover that sound. Over the years I've gotten into the habit of pressing and rolling in too much. Thanks so much for sharing and congratulations to your students!

jrbrook76: Thanks. Obtaining a beautiful, flexible and expressive sound is the main focus of my teaching approach. Everything else flows from there...
